Each November, delegates from all eight of CHBA BC’s local associations come together for our Legislature Day in Victoria. This training event is all about demonstrating the most effective communication methods to express our industry expertise that our members can provide on housing policy. We begin this series of events through a productive training day preparing members to have collaborative discussions in their MLA meetings.
Meetings
CHBA BC delegates hold scheduled meetings with MLAs from all parties when possible, including cabinet ministers and at times, the premier. The purpose of these meetings is twofold: first, to exemplify the professional nature of our members with legislators, and second, to discuss housing policies from the very people who build homes each and every day.
Question Period
CHBA BC members also have the opportunity to witness Question Period live while at the legislature. This event often sees recognition from MLAs and ministers during their Introductions by Members (of the legislature) for both CHBA BC as well as individual association members.
Reception
CHBA BC also holds a packed evening reception at the Hotel Grand Pacific open to all MLAs and their staff to attend. This provides an excellent opportunity to speak with MLAs in a more social and candid setting reflecting a person-to-person relationship than the earlier meetings, which are often legislator-to-constituent. The reception also sees speeches from all parties in attendance, including our very own CEO Neil Moody and the current CHBA BC President.
Debrief
After a busy day of meetings and the reception, our members get together the next day to share the lessons we learned and how we can build on the momentum going forward. MLAs often indicate they want our members to come back and share more ideas, giving us the opportunity for future follow-ups and a strengthened relationship.
