The 2019 Builders’ Education Summit

Canadian Home Builders’ Association of BC launched its Builders’ Education Summit event in 2016 and the success achieved made it an inevitable part of the educational value CHBA BC provides to members.

Now an annual phenomenon, the event is held in October every year and spans three days wherein builders and their employees gain essential knowledge needed to run a successful construction/renovation company. Over these three days, attendees can receive up to 22.5 CPD points towards their BC Housing residential builder licence renewal. One of the three days also includes a trade show component to see what the newest and greatest suppliers have to offer.

“We bring together a lineup of seminars that represent different aspects of the industry. This way, builders can choose only the seminars that interest them and will benefit their business,” says Laura Chok, Senior Director, Events and Education Programs at CHBA BC.

Builders from across the province may have to travel multiple times a year to attend in-person seminars in larger cities or take advantage of online programs. The Summit and Builders’ Super Week (another annual education event at CHBA BC) on the other hand, provide an opportunity for obtaining all of their required CPD points in a single event. For home building companies, often with small teams, this is a great advantage to meet their points requirement.

“We try to provide a mix of seminars with hard and soft skills. For example, as a builder, it could be challenging to find training in team building and business development specific to residential construction. By offering it as part of the Summit, we’re able to meet a diverse range of needs.”

Currently, in its fourth year, the Builders’ Education Summit is ready to roll out from October 9-11, 2019, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver. The event brings a comprehensive range of topics imparting best practices on building safety, heating, ventilation and cooling, project planning methodology, building and retaining teams in a construction company, accounting techniques, and Microsoft Excel, which enable organizations to run like a well-oiled machine. Each day is made up of half-day and full-day options, providing flexibility and choice. The event brochure lays out all the topics covered.

“We know that this is also a great networking opportunity for attendees. We try to integrate this into the program with our trade show, and refreshment breaks throughout the day to give the attendees a chance to discuss and reflect with their peers.”

With some great speakers lined up for this Fall, attendees will be equipped with all the information they’re looking for to improve their businesses and earn their CPD points.
