An update on CHBA BC’s government relations activities

News and Events

Federal Election Results

“Justin Trudeau will be returning to the Prime Minister’s Office, but this time he will be leading a Liberal minority government. The Bloc Québécois will enter the 43rd Parliament with a far stronger presence. The NDP surge some pollsters anticipated did not materialize but the party does have enough seats to hold the balance of power in a Liberal minority government. The Conservatives increased their share of the popular vote and their seat count and continue to be the official opposition.” CBC News

The last federal election saw parties of all stripes discussing various national housing policies to increase affordability, vacancy, and access for first-time homeowners. Both the stress test and amortization period were debated, along with proposals on various energy efficiency retrofit policies and plans to tackle money laundering. CHBA National also co-hosted a debate amongst members of the major federal parties specifically on housing within Canada. You can read more about CHBA’s national housing industry issues here

Consultations

Accessibility Legislation Submission

CHBA BC will be providing a submission to the British Columbia Framework for Accessibility Legislation. The purpose of this Framework for Accessibility Legislation is to begin a conversation about accessibility legislation for B.C. Currently, B.C. does not have comprehensive legislation to help identify, remove, and prevent barriers experienced by persons with disabilities.

The submission will be available to the public once completed, near the end of November 2019.

Upcoming Events

Legislature Day

The provincial legislature has resumed for the fall and members from across the province will be joining us for the second annual Legislature Day, which will be held in Victoria on November 24th to the 26th.

Legislature Day is an excellent opportunity for members to express policy issues that affect all members here in B.C., along with increasing the profile of our association and ensuring that MLAs hear the voices of home builders.

Ongoing Issues

Beneficial Ownership Registry

The Province is taking the next step in its fight against money laundering and tax evasion by requiring private B.C. businesses to keep transparency records of beneficial owners.

Effective May 1, 2020, amendments to the Business Corporations Act will require private businesses in B.C. to keep and maintain transparency records of beneficial owners, including individuals who have direct or indirect control of the company or its shares.

CHBA BC has provided submissions to both the money laundering and Land Owner Act consultations, you can read the province’s news release here.
