*  To meet the Relevant Enactments equivalency both BC Building Code Part 1 and Part 2 must be successfully completed.

 

Description

To receive the “Relevant Enactments” qualification requirement for New Residential Builders as set out by the Licensing and Consumer Services Branch of BC Housing, you must complete both BC Building Code Part 1 AND Part 2 (Please note that Part 1 must be taken before Part 2).

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOMES

Are you aware of BC Building Code standards? Will your projects pass inspections? Learn the role of the BC Building Code (Part 9) and how it is developed, as well as how to use the Code book and mark it for easy reference:
• Identify who enforces the Code and explore the general permit process;
• Explore Code requirements relating to floors-on-ground, crawl space, garages & carports, and secondary suites;
• Understand how the Code relates to other legislation;
• Identify soil-bearing capacity and problematic soil conditions, including radon areas and mitigation strategies;
• Explore the basics of excavation, footings and foundation walls;
• Demonstrate an understanding of seismic and climatic zones in BC and the related impacts on residential construction.

 

COURSE MATERIALS

The Student Manual, “British Columbia Building Code Part 1” (included as part of the course fee).
It is mandatory that students have access to a copy of the 2018 BC Building Code book (available for purchase at www.bccodes.ca). It is up to the student to determine if they want a hard-copy version or an electronic version.

 

COURSE FORMAT

• Review all course materials in full.
• Complete mandatory online chapter quiz questions and assignments.
• Attend the in-class session, which is an instructor-led high level review of course materials.
• Write an in-class final exam (an 80% passing mark on the final exam is required to successfully complete the course).
