Mission
The Canadian Home Builders’ Association of British Columbia is the leading advocate of the residential construction industry across the province. We work to the benefit of our members and the public through excellence in government and public relations, education and building innovation.
Vision
The Canadian Home Builders’ Association of British Columbia is built on a vision of housing excellence. We provide industry leadership that creates a professional, affordable, and sustainable housing environment.
Code of Ethics
The purpose of the Code of Ethics is to articulate and promote ethical behavior and values of conduct among members and directors of the association so that they fulfill their duty and render services to the community, profession, and fellow members in a fair and professional manner.
These responsibilities are freely and solemnly assumed as they form part of an obligation for members and directors of the Association.
Our President
CHBA BC President, Mark Bernhardt, is President of Bernhardt Contracting, a member of CHBA Vancouver Island, Central Interior, and South Okanagan.
Since founding the company in 2007, Mark has focused on undertaking innovative and impactful projects. This led the team to build some of North America’s most efficient homes, including taking on the Living Building Challenge, Passive House, and everything in between. The team is currently developing a Net Zero, Passive House, low-carbon affordable housing project in Northern Nova Scotia, which when complete (in 2025) will be the most energy-efficient, lowest-carbon affordable housing on the East Coast.
Mark defines ‘better homes’ as homes that are not just energy efficient but also have superior indoor air quality, are built with low-carbon materials, and are fueled by low-carbon fuels. Homes that meet this standard will also by nature be healthier to live in, more resilient in disasters and insulate owners from rising costs in times of high inflation. The “perfect” home accomplishes all this at a price people can afford.
Using experience gained on his own projects and data collected from others, over the past few years he has spent much of his time helping other builders gear up for Step Code and higher-performance buildings.
He is an instructor for CHBA BC, educating BC’s homebuilders on the latest building science. Mark delivers CHBA’s Net Zero, and other building performance courses to homebuilders and renovators across the province. He believes that the key to success for builders is to have a deep knowledge of how buildings work, and the need to build for our changing world.
Preparing builders for the future will be a guiding principle for Mark’s time as President of the CHBA BC.
