CHBA BC welcomes today’s BC Government announcement as a positive first step toward improving housing delivery in B.C.
Giving local governments more flexibility to reduce or waive development cost charges can lower upfront costs, improve project viability, and support more homes getting built. These changes also help position B.C. to access federal infrastructure funding through the Build Communities Strong Fund and create a pathway for stronger housing-enabling measures.
However, more work remains.
Once federal funding is secured, we urge the B.C. government to build on this momentum with further action to reduce development cost charges by up to 50% similar to recent measures announced in Ontario.
CHBA BC’s President, Wally James, added our voice to today’s announcement:
“Across the province, the ability to deliver new homes by B.C.’s homebuilders continues to be challenged by rising development costs and ongoing uncertainty. We have long advocated for measures that reduce upfront costs and improve access to infrastructure funding. These are important steps toward increasing new housing supply and improving housing attainability across B.C.”
