New Worker Safety Orientation Toolbox – Now Available!

It is no secret that young and new workers are at risk on worksites.  In an effort to preserve the health and safety of these workers, WorkSafeBC has recently introduced new regulations.

Effective July 26th 2007, WorkSafeBC has approved amendments to Part 3 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations that require all new and young workers to complete a health and safety orientation before they commence work.  This regulation outlines specific requirements for employers when orienting young and new workers and also addresses:

•    Definitions of young and new workers
•    Topics that must be covered within education and training
•    Maintenance of documentation

In order to assist construction companies in meeting the specific safety orientation requirements, the Construction Safety Network has partnered with the construction industry to produce a New Worker Safety Orientation Toolbox, which includes the following elements:

•    Copy of the new regulation and guidelines
•    Jobsite posters which promote awareness of the 13 essentials of safety orientations
•    Green Hand Gold Hand orientation program
•    Safety orientation form and guidelines for its use

All COR-certified companies will receive this package in mid-August.  Any other companies wishing to obtain this valuable toolbox should contact the Construction Safety Network at 604-436-0232 / info@safetynetwork.bc.ca

Safety programs can be used as an effective risk management tool in your organization to minimize the cost of incidents on your jobsites. There are four main types of costs associated with incidents in the workplace including:

    • Reputation
    • Liability and legislation
Contractors with bad safety records are subject to financial fines, lost work time, higher labour turnover leading to increased costs for training, increased production costs due to a lower skill level labour force, and increased accidents.
