Access CPD points online through CHBA BC’s new renovation course

The Canadian Home Builders’ Association of BC (CHBA BC) has offered continuing education programs to the residential construction industry for over twenty years. However, a new milestone was recently achieved with the launch of CHBA BC’s first fully online course.

Renovation Fundamentals is a three-hour course that focuses on the basic knowledge needed to run a successful renovation business in Canada.

The key benefit of an online course is to reach new areas of the province that would not be otherwise served by an in-class session. A three-hour course is also well suited for an online platform as it can be completed at the student’s own pace, whether that be in one sitting or over a longer period of time.

In addition, this knowledge may be beneficial to builders across Canada. Renovations is a topic that transcends provincial borders, as many Canadians desire to improve the accessibility, livability, and energy-efficiency of their homes. Homeowners and future clients may also choose to renovate rather than relocate in order to stay in their desired neighbourhoods or communities.

The course content was determined in consultation with active renovators and industry experts, and designed to introduce new or prospective renovators to essential topics, including:

  • business development principles;
  • best practices for health and safety concerns;
  • evaluation of homes for potential toxic and dangerous substances;
  • human resources functions;
  • building science considerations; and
  • customer service.

Robert Capar, chair of CHBA BC’s Renovator’s Council and owner of maison d’etre design-build inc. in Vancouver, was one of the many volunteers across the province that helped to shape the course into what it is today. According to Robert, “whether you are just getting started, or running a growing renovation company, this course is full of great tips and regulatory information you need to know.”

Each module of study includes informative videos, interactive experiences, and questions that reinforce understanding of the concepts. Students that need continuing professional development (CPD) for builder licensing, as required by BC Housing, may receive 6 CPD points after passing the final exam.

This course is ready to go for any interested renovators from coast to coast!
